Traditional wellness advice tends to focus heavily on self-care — warm bubble baths, nutrient-rich meals, regular movement and mindfulness practices. These are all beautiful and beneficial, but they can fall short if they are practiced in isolation. Without meaningful human connection, self-care can begin to feel like another item on an endless to-do list.

What many women in midlife are truly craving goes beyond the surface. We are yearning for authenticity. We are seeking spaces where vulnerability is welcomed, where depth is the norm, and where we don’t have to perform, explain, or pretend to be anything other than who we really are. This is what midlife circles offer.

Community provides what individual practices often cannot:

  • Belonging – A space where you can exhale and say, “me too,” instead of wondering, “what’s wrong with me?

Platforms like Meetup host numerous groups under themes like “Midlife Reinvention” or “Over 50s” with thousands of members globally. For example: “Midlife Reinvention For Women” groups have over 13,000 members across 42 groups, with some of the largest circles based in London, Fort Collins, Boulder, and Minneapolis.

Women Over 50 groups” have nearly 4,000 members in 12 groups, with active circles in cities like Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, and London.

Most attendees arrive alone, but the group ensures that everyone feels comfortable and included. The atmosphere is built around humour, laughter, friendliness, and acceptance.

With a focus on expanding horizons and exploring new interests, the group encourages all members to take an active role. Anyone is welcome to organize an event, fostering a truly collaborative and engaging environment.

  • The 45+ Girl Friends Club – London, UK

The 45+ Girl Friends Club is a warm, women-only social group created for women aged 45 and over who are looking to expand their circle of female friendships.

Practical Ways to Build Your Own Midlife Circle

Not everyone has access to an existing community — and that’s okay. You can build your own midlife circle, too. And guess what? You don’t need a large platform or perfect plan to begin. All it takes is a little intention and a willingness to reach out.

  • Step 1: Begin with Intentionality

Decide what kind of circle would nourish your soul. Do you want a book club with real talk? A wellness accountability group? A monthly potluck with depth and laughter? Begin by naming the kind of space you want to create.

  • Step 2: Invite from the Heart

Consider who in your life might be quietly longing for the same thing. You only need a small handful — 3 to 5 women is more than enough to start something sacred.

  • Step 3: Set the Sacred Container

Choose a regular day and time to meet, whether online or in person. Create agreements together — like confidentiality, non-judgement, and deep listening — so that everyone feels safe to share.

  • Step 4: Keep It Soulful, Not Performative
