Glow On The Go: Why Collagen Gummies Are So Popular

4 min read

Tasty, healthy, and easy to take, collagen gummies remind us of the jelly treats that we had as kids but now with the added benefit of improving our skin, nails, joints, and bones.

Considered a supplement designed to help our overall well-being in midlife and beyond, they have become hugely popular in recent years as an easy way to replenish our body with proteins on the go. But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the best collagen gummies for your skin and are they really as good as they claim?

CrunchyTales has dug around for you. Whether you’re a skincare newbie or a seasoned pro, this guide will help you make an informed decision and choose the best collagen gummies to enhance your natural beauty from the inside out. So let’s get started!

What is collagen and how does it benefit the skin?

Collagen is a major component of connective tissue; it forms a scaffold that provides strength and structure within the body. Taking collagen supplements, such as collagen gummies, can help boost your body’s collagen production and improve your skin’s health and appearance. These supplements are typically made from cow, fish, or pig collagen, broken down into smaller molecules that are easier to absorb by the body.

The board-certified dermatologist Dr Whitney Bowe described our body’s collagen as “ropes of protein in the skin.

When we’re young, the rope remains tight, but as we age, the ends begin to fray. Essentially, our bodies are not able to replace the collagen we are losing as quickly as it is breaking down, hence collagen gummies can come to the rescue.

Different types of collagen gummies available in the market

When it comes to collagen supplements, there are several types of collagen available. The most common types of collagen used in supplements are type I, type II, and type III.

  • Type I collagen is the most abundant type of collagen found in our bodies and is responsible for maintaining skin, hair, nails, and bones’ health and structure.
  • Type II collagen is found primarily in cartilage and is essential for joint health.
  • Type III collagen is found in the skin, blood vessels, and internal organs and helps maintain skin elasticity.

When it comes to collagen gummies, you’ll typically find type I and type III collagen supplements. However, some gummies may also contain other ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid or vitamin C, to enhance collagen absorption and improve skin health

Why collagen gummies are so practical

Their success is easy to explain. Available in a variety of different flavours and shapes – whether it’s rings, ovals, little shields or bears – they are sold as collagen peptides or hydrolyzed collagen and can be popped in your handbag or sit in your desk drawer to be eaten at any time of the day like a treat.

As a fruit-flavoured gelatin-like substance, collagen gummies are not too different from sweets. Normally, they will contain an ingredient to give them their texture, such as pectin (from fruit) or gelatin (derived from animals), as well as some type of flavouring, like orange juice, in addition to collagen.

Believed to have a higher bioavailability than non-chewable vitamins, they are also more easily absorbed by the body and represent the most practical way for busy women dealing with the highs and lows of midlife to look after themselves and boost their natural collagen production.

Factors to consider when choosing collagen gummies

When choosing a collagen gummy supplement, don’t just focus on the flavour only.

It’s important to select products with the added benefit of Vitamin C (the key nutrient responsible for stimulating collagen production) or hyaluronic acid, that use grass-fed sources of collagen and are free from artificial colours and sweeteners.

You should also carefully follow the dosage suggestion on the package to reap some benefits in the medium-long term and increase skin elasticity. Usually, intake per day for a midlife woman ranges between 2.5 to 15 g of collagen depending on her specific goals and needs. For example, the dosage is different if you are healing joint pain vs taking it for skin health.

Last but not least – as with all supplements- it’s important to be sure that the collagen gummies are third-party tested and verified by a reputable organization, too. Choose a reputable brand with positive customer reviews and ratings.

Are collagen gummies safe?

Collagen gummies are a great option to increase your body’s collagen level. Although, there needs to be more comprehensive research on collagen gummies’ efficacy and side effects.

It is possible that some of these benefits are attainable, according to a 2019 literature review in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology. The review found some data from double-blind placebo-controlled studies to support that collagen could increase skin elasticity, collagen density and overall hydration. But a lot more evidence is needed.

Dr Bowe believes that the studies, “though small and preliminary,” show promise. So, basically, collagen gummies could improve skin elasticity and hydration and reduce wrinkles, but it cannot be determined exactly where these collagen peptides will be used within the body.

When in doubt, talk to your doctor and keep following a healthy diet, rich in collagen, specifically tough cuts of meat full of connective tissue like pot roast, brisket, and chuck steak.

However, when oestrogen loss during menopause has a significant impact on collagen production within the body, and we are not able to produce enough of it naturally from our lifestyle, supplements could be a solution.
