The Best Loungewear Pieces For 50 Something Ladies

3 min read

Designed to be worn around the house, but smart enough so that you’ll feel pulled together on off-duty days, loungewear is the perfect solution for casual dressing right now: it can be both chic and comfortable. Yes, staying in doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style, and we can’t deny that looking cool is a massive mood booster, especially in times like these.

According to the ‘Lockdown Economy Report’ by LoveTheSales, comfort clothing brought on by digital retail therapy is just one of the many consumer trends emerging from the lockdown. Loungewear has faced a significant uptake in consumer demand with 433% growth amid global lockdown procedures, with comfort-first shoe brands like Ugg and Crocs being two of the highest-performing brands in. Other products in the comfy catalogue also reached new heights of growth, with hoodies (a 267% rise in consumer demand), sweatshirts (117%) and joggers (116%) making a significant impact on buying decisions. Waist-up videoconferencing is also influencing our buying decisions, with casual tops dominating 167% growth in lockdown and bottoms, somewhat embarrassingly, only 39%.

Key pieces to wear at home (and everywhere)

Yes, feeling good in the clothes we wear is also essential for a positive work-from-home experience (in case you have to schedule a last-minute video conference call): as sensible as it is to get dressed every day rather than to lounge in our pyjamas, nobody wants to sit in a blazer, tight jeans and heels. Whether you are opting for a T-shirt and a cosy cardigan (for a look you won’t feel ashamed opening the door to your postman in), a stylish tracksuit (both easy to throw on in the morning and take off at the end of the day), the evergreen combo hoodie and comfy jogger, you can’t go wrong investing in some key pieces that will last you way beyond the lockdown period.

If you’re looking for daywear inspiration, Cucumber Clothing will tick all your boxes for comfort and style. Their cutting-edge, super soft, breathable fabrics get serious with your sweat, and their odour-eliminating properties make sure you stay deliciously fresh all day long thanks to volcanic mineral technology. They are also anti-crush, meaning little or no ironing.

Now, more than ever, the question, ‘what-to-wear’ has taken on a deeper meaning than we could have thought possible – Eileen Willet, co-founder of Cucumber Clothing explains-. The emphasis is on comfort, but we love to feel we are achieving this without sacrificing style. Our classic feel-good outfit? The V Neck Top and Harem Trousers, both made in our signature jersey. The V neck is smart enough for work calls and soft enough for sleep. With flattering, draped cap sleeves, and a subtly sexy deep v neck the brilliant shape that gives you curves where you want them. Our harem trousers will also see you through your day. We love the relaxed drape of the cut, the slim cuffs that can be rolled up or down and the adjustable drawstring tie.

We love also their Tiered Dress in coral and stone. Made from 37.5 Technology silky soft jersey, it has the prettiest scoop neck and is slightly high-waisted, with sleeves and essential pockets.  Throw it over first thing in the morning and you can wear it all day long. Pair it with crisp white trainers for your daily runaround, or platform espadrilles for a summery look in the garden.

Some inspiration can be found also in browsing the latest ASOS Curve Lounge Mix & Match collection. Their pieces are so comfortable and feel deliciously free to lounge around in. They have all kinds of basic in ultra-lightweight fabric, minimal tops, super soft long-sleeve sweats, tank tops and knitted sets. We like the Curve Lounge Minimal Wide Leg Jumpsuit with rope channel waist in black. Super comfy and very eclectic.

If you’re more of a cashmere kind of person, Everlane, the online fashion retailer, has released a ReCashmere Lounge Jumpsuit in two gorgeous shades that you’ll want to snuggle up in all day long. This cosy one-piece features front patch pockets, an easy neckline, and a relaxed, lounge-worthy fit. Plus, it’s made of premium Italian yarn that’s been recycled for 50% impact, which means it’s just as soft and beautiful as our 100 per cent Grade-A cashmere, but with half the carbon footprint.

Fifty One Apparel is also a brand that provides extreme comfort and sleek designs, leaving you feeling luxurious and ready to relax. Their multi-functional loungewear uses “Certified Space Technology” material, originally developed by Nasa, that regulates temperature using, a method of microencapsulation where the phase-change materials are enclosed in a polymer shell meant to be worn in bed or to the office. We love the long sleeve Rosie Cowl Neck Top. Combining comfort with sophistication this top has been designed for indulgent lounging or exquisite dining. The lovely neckline shape and the rich deep teal colour bring a luxurious finish to this style. The garment has the added benefit of using a body regulating technology which ensures comfort both day and night, winter and spring. The ideal garment to alleviate the effects of hot flushes.
