Beat the Heat: Summer Hair Care Tips for Ageless Beauty

4 min read

Sun protection has always been a skincare priority for me. I slather on SPF like second nature (especially in midlife), diligently guarding my complexions against wrinkles and sunspots.

But here’s a secret I’m willing to share (with a touch of embarrassment): until recently, my hair care routine stopped at conditioner. Never once did I consider that our precious strands needed shielding from the sun’s harsh rays too until my hair started to get frizzy, brassy, and worst of all dry and fragile,

Fast forward to this summer, and I’m a convert – a sunscreen-for-hair evangelist!

The truth is that sun exposure wreaks havoc on mature hair, just like it does on our skin. The UVA and UVB rays we know and (should) fear zap moisture, leaving hair dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. Over time, this UV damage can even lead to colour fading (both natural and dyed), dull and lacklustre appearance, inflammation in the scalp, and a gradual reduction in melanin production.

UV rays can also harm the keratin, a protein naturally present in our hair. Keratin plays a vital role in strengthening and safeguarding our hair, giving it a radiant appearance and a softer texture.

So, what’s a sun-worshipping (but wiser!) woman to do? The good news is, that protecting your hair is as easy as adding a new product to your beach bag. All you need to do is add an extra dose of TLC to your mane.

How to protect your hair from sun damage

A multi-tasking approach usually works best for hair, even under the sun. Think sun protection, hydration, and a healthy lifestyle (which includes avoiding prolonged sun exposure, especially during peak hours and plenty of antioxidants in your diet).

Here are some tips to keep your hair shining under the sun.

  • Hats: Your First Line of Defense

A wide-brimmed hat is your best friend. It offers physical protection for your scalp, ears, and neck – areas prone to sunburn. Choose breathable materials like straw or linen for comfort, and don’t be afraid to embrace a floppy hat for a touch of summer chic.

Alternatively,  consider a UV-protective hair wrap, especially for long hair. These lightweight fabrics offer additional shielding and can double as a stylish accessory.

  • Sunscreen for Scalps? Yes, Please!

Many forget the scalp is skin too! No matter how much hair you have on your head, the sun’s rays can still get through. Look for lightweight, non-greasy sunscreens specifically formulated for the scalp. These often come in sprays, mists or even powder for easy application.

  • Leave-in hair Sunscreen with UV Protection

Pack a specific leave-in hair sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to provide a protective barrier and much-needed hydration. These days, you can find lightweight sprays, mists or oils formulated to absorb quickly and not weigh down your hair. In case you have very dry hair, look for ingredients like coconut oil, argan or aloe vera for an extra moisture boost.

Apply generously before heading outdoors, focusing on the ends (the most vulnerable part) and reapply every few hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

  • Post-Sun TLC: After-Sun Hair Masks

Switch your usual shampoo and conditioner for seriously moisturising formulas. After sun hair masks will work wonders on sun-parched locks. Pack a travel-sized product formulated to replenish moisture and restore shine.

Stay hydrated under the sun

Because sun exposure dries out your hair, it’s important to keep it as moisturized as possible inside out. Hair is made up of about 25% water. When you’re dehydrated, your hair loses moisture, making it dry, brittle, and frizzy. This can lead to increased breakage and split ends.

So, drink plenty of water, infuse your water with fruits, vegetables, or herbs for added flavour, pack hydrating snacks like fruits and veggies in your bag and never forget your water bottle.

By incorporating these simple steps into your beach routine, you can ensure your hair and scalp stay healthy and radiant all summer long. Remember, sun protection is an investment in your overall well-being, so embrace the sunshine safely and confidently!
