Why Hiding Your Age Does a Disservice to Us All

2 min read

Let’s be honest, the pressure to defy age hits women hard. We spend our youth yearning to be grown-up, then a good chunk of our adulthood battling the perception that somehow, being older makes us less.

For years, I confess, I played the game. Airbrushed photos, strategic clothing choices (sorry, I’m an Italian fashionista), even the occasional fib about my birth year. But somewhere in my 50s, something shifted.

Hiding my age wasn’t making me feel younger, it was making me feel like a fraud. It created a weird disconnect between the person I was inside – a woman with a rich tapestry of experiences, some heartbreaks, yes, but also a ton of triumphs – and the image I projected.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t look after myself, improving my look and wellbeing, hitting the gym and having a facial. Self-care is a must at any stage of life, after all.

My point is that our experiences shape who we are and we should be proud of them. The lessons learned, the love shared, the strength we build through hardship – these are what make us interesting, what give us depth.

So why downplay the very things that contribute to the richness of our lives?

Here’s the unexpected upside: owning my age has been liberating. It’s a weight off my shoulders. I can laugh at the inevitable wrinkles, celebrate the wisdom that comes with time, and focus my energy on the things that truly matter – connecting with loved ones, pursuing my passions, and maybe even rocking that bold lipstick I wouldn’t have dared to wear in my 20s.

Plus, there’s a power in authenticity. When we embrace who we are, we challenge the narrow beauty standards that often dictate how women should age. We inspire other women to do the same. It’s a small act of rebellion, but one that can chip away at a culture obsessed with youth.

So, the next time you feel the urge to hide your age, remember: you are a collection of experiences, a culmination of your journey. Embrace it. Own it. And watch the confidence that comes with it radiate like the most beautiful accessory.
